Telling vs. Showing: Zero-Shot and Few-Shot

Explaining takes words. Showing takes examples. Showing almost always wins.

Hiring signal: What changes when you use this: you stop trying to describe the output you want and start showing the AI what it looks like — your output consistency jumps dramatically, especially for repetitive tasks.

The Problem

There are two ways to tell AI what you want. You can explain it in words, or you can show it with examples. Most people only ever explain. They write paragraphs describing what they want, and then wonder why the output doesn't match.

The thing is: AI is really good at pattern matching. If you show it 1-3 examples of the pattern you want, it'll reproduce that pattern more reliably than if you wrote 500 words trying to describe it.

Zero-Shot: Telling

Zero-shot means you give the AI instructions with no examples. You're relying entirely on your description.

Zero-shot prompt:

Write a product description for an Etsy listing. Make it engaging and highlight the key features. The tone should be friendly and enthusiastic but not over-the-top. Include the materials, dimensions, and care instructions. Keep it under 100 words.

This can work fine. But notice how many words you spend describing the tone, the structure, and the feel — "engaging," "friendly and enthusiastic but not over-the-top." Those are subjective. The AI has to interpret them. And its interpretation might not match yours.
