Phase 0: How AI Actually Reads Your Words · 30 min · ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini (any)
Tokens, Context Windows & Temperature
Three technical concepts, zero math. Just analogies that make your prompts better.
Hiring signal: What changes when you use this: you stop hitting context limits by accident, you know when to ask for creative vs safe output, and you can explain these concepts to a non-technical colleague without jargon.
What you will learn
- Understand what a token is and why AI sometimes misspells or miscounts
- Understand what a context window is and why long chats start to forget earlier details
- Understand what temperature is and how it controls safe vs creative output
- Know how these three concepts change your prompting behavior
The Problem
There are three technical concepts that show up in every AI tool, and most people either ignore them or get confused by the explanations. You don't need to understand the math. You need the mental models — because they change how you prompt.
Tokens: Chunks of Words
AI doesn't read words the way you do. It reads in chunks called tokens. A token is roughly three-quarters of a word — common words like "the" or "and" are one token, longer words like "understanding" might be two or three.
Why does this matter to you? Two reasons:
- AI sometimes misspells or miscounts. Because it's working with chunks, not letters, it can miscount how many words are in its own output. If you ask for "exactly 100 words," you might get 94 or 108. This isn't a bug — it's a feature of how the AI processes text.
- Longer prompts cost more (on paid tools) and take longer. Every token in your prompt is processed. A 2,000-word prompt isn't just harder for you to write — it gives the AI more to wade through.
The practical takeaway: be thorough, not verbose. Give the AI everything it needs, but don't pad your prompts with filler. Structure beats length.
