Iterate, Break It Up, Ask It to Clarify

The first answer is a draft, not a final. The real skill is knowing how to steer from there.

The Problem

Most people treat each AI interaction as a one-shot: type a prompt, get an answer, judge it. If it's bad, they start a new chat and try again from scratch. This is the slowest possible way to get to good output.

The real skill is iteration — treating the first answer as a draft and steering from there. Combined with two related moves — breaking big asks into steps and asking the AI to clarify before answering — this is what separates people who get great results from people who get frustrated.

Move 1: Iterate, Don't Restart

When the first answer isn't right, don't start over. Correct it. The AI has context from the first exchange — use it.

Common iteration patterns:

What's wrong	What to say
Too long	"Cut this in half. Keep the structure but remove the fluff."
Too formal	"Make this more conversational — like texting a smart friend."
Missing something	"Add a section about [X]. Keep the rest the same."
Wrong structure	"Reformat this as a table instead of paragraphs."
Off on tone	"This is too salesy. Make it helpful and informational instead."
Good but incomplete	"This is great. Now expand section 2 with more specific examples."

The key insight: "This is great, now..." is the most powerful iteration move. You're telling the AI what's working (so it keeps doing it) and what to do next. This builds on the good parts instead of throwing everything away.

"This is great, now..." beats starting over
When you start over, the AI has zero context. When you say "this is great, now expand the second section," the AI knows what "great" looks like (the first output) and exactly what to change. You get to the final version in 2-3 iterations instead of 5-10 restarts.
