The Problem

When you ask AI a question without specifying who it should be, it answers as a generic helpful assistant. That's fine for simple tasks. But for anything that benefits from expertise, perspective, or a specific voice, generic helpful assistant is the wrong persona.

Telling the AI who to be — "you are a..." — shifts three things at once: what it draws on (expertise), how it talks (tone/vocabulary), and what it notices (what's relevant).

How It Works

When you say "you are a seasoned marketing strategist," the AI doesn't actually become one. But it shifts which patterns it pulls from — the language, frameworks, and perspectives associated with that role. It's like asking a friend who happens to be a marketer for advice vs. asking a friend who's a lawyer. Same person, different lens.

With persona:

You are a business consultant who has helped 100+ freelancers set their rates. I'm a freelance graphic designer with 3 years of experience, transitioning from project-based work to retainer clients. How should I price my consulting services?

The first answer will be generic pricing advice. The second will be specific to a freelance designer moving to retainers — because the persona narrows the lens.
