Devil's Advocate & Stress-Testing
The best use of AI might be telling you why your idea won't work.
Hiring signal: What changes when you use this: you use AI as a thinking partner for decisions, not just a drafting tool — which means you make fewer decisions you regret.
What you will learn
- Use AI as a devil's advocate to stress-test decisions and plans
- Structure pro/con prompts that produce useful pushback, not generic criticism
- Ask AI to argue the opposite side of a decision
- Know when stress-testing helps and when it's just anxiety
The Problem
When you ask AI "what do you think of my plan?", it tends to be supportive. It'll say "that's a great idea!" and maybe add a few gentle suggestions. This feels good but it's not useful. You don't need a cheerleader — you need someone who'll find the holes before they become problems.
AI is excellent at being a devil's advocate — but only if you ask it to be.
The Devil's Advocate Prompt
Instead of asking "what do you think?", ask the AI to argue against you:
I'm considering [specific decision/plan]. I want you to be a skeptical advisor who has seen many similar plans fail. Don't validate this — tear it apart. Tell me:
- The three most likely ways this fails
- The assumptions I'm making that might be wrong
- What I'm not considering that I should be
- The one thing that, if it goes wrong, would make this catastrophic
Be specific and honest. Don't sugarcoat.
This produces dramatically different output than "what do you think?" The AI will identify real risks, challenge your assumptions, and surface blind spots. Not all of its criticism will be valid — but some of it will be, and that's the stuff that saves you from bad decisions.
