The Problem
When people use AI to compare options, they usually ask "which is better, A or B?" This gives you the AI's opinion — which is generic and not particularly useful. What you need is a structured comparison that surfaces the tradeoffs so YOU can decide.
The Comparison Matrix Prompt
I'm comparing these options:
- Option A: [name and brief description]
- Option B: [name and brief description]
- Option C: [name and brief description] (if applicable)
Compare them on these criteria:
- [Criterion 1 — e.g., cost]
- [Criterion 2 — e.g., ease of setup]
- [Criterion 3 — e.g., scalability]
- [Criterion 4 — e.g., community/support]
- [Criterion 5 — e.g., integration with existing tools]
Format as a table with one row per option and one column per criterion. In each cell, give a 1-2 sentence assessment. Below the table, list the top 3 tradeoffs I should consider. Then, based on my priority of [state your #1 criterion], give me a recommendation with reasoning.
This produces a scannable table, identifies the key tradeoffs, and gives you a recommendation tied to your stated priority — not a generic "it depends."
