Phase 8: Traps, Judgment & Staying Current · 30 min · Any new AI tool you're evaluating
The 10-Minute Tool Evaluation Framework
A new AI tool launches every week. Here's how to evaluate any of them in 10 minutes — the meta-skill that keeps this course from going stale.
Hiring signal: What changes when you use this: you use a 10-minute framework to evaluate any new AI tool — the meta-skill that keeps your AI skills current without burning hours a week.
What you will learn
- Use a 10-minute framework to evaluate any new AI tool
- Assess tools on capability, reliability, cost, privacy, and longevity
- Decide quickly whether a tool is worth deeper investment
- Build the habit of quick evaluation instead of FOMO-driven adoption
The Problem
New AI tools launch constantly. Your LinkedIn feed is full of "you need to try this!" posts. Every newsletter has a "top 10 new AI tools" list. You can't try them all — and most aren't worth your time.
You need a quick, repeatable framework to evaluate any new AI tool in 10 minutes and decide: is this worth my time, or should I move on?
The 10-Minute Framework
Minute 1-2: What Does It Actually Do?
- Read the homepage tagline (not the marketing fluff — the actual feature description)
- What category is it? (Chat, image, video, code, writing, research, automation)
- What problem does it solve?
- Is it a new tool or a wrapper around an existing model?
Minute 3-4: Can I Test It Right Now?
- Is there a free tier or demo?
- Do I need to sign up? How much friction is there?
- If I can't test it in 2 minutes, is it worth the friction?
Minute 5-6: The 3-Test
Run 3 tasks you already do with your current tools:
- A task you do often (your most common use case)
- A task where your current tool is weak
- A task from this course (e.g., a specificity prompt, a comparison matrix, an image prompt)
Compare the output to what you'd get from your current tool. Is it better, worse, or the same?
Minute 7-8: The Dealbreakers
Check for:
- Privacy: Does it train on your data? Can you opt out? Check the privacy policy.
- Cost: What's the free tier? What's the paid tier? Is it worth it vs. your current tool?
- Data portability: Can you export your data/conversations? Or are you locked in?
- Hallucination test: Ask it a question where you know the answer. Does it hallucinate?
Minute 9-10: The Decision
Based on the 3-test and dealbreaker check, decide:
- Adopt: It's better than my current tool for a task I do often. Switch or add it to my toolkit.
- Bookmark: Interesting but not better than what I have. Check back in 3-6 months.
- Skip: Not worth it. Move on.
