Phase 0: The FDE Role & Deployment Mindset · 40 min · Python · SQL · Docker
The T-Shaped FDE Profile
Deep enough to build it, broad enough to ship it.
What you will learn
- Map the FDE T-profile: deep in Python, SQL, data engineering, RAG, agents; broad across SSO, cloud, Docker, dbt, enterprise platforms
- Assess your current skills against the T-profile and identify gaps
- Understand why product sense is a required FDE skill, not optional
- Identify the consulting layer skills: Minto Pyramid, decomposition, stakeholder management
Objective
What you'll learn
By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:
- Map the FDE T-profile: deep in Python, SQL, data engineering, RAG, agents; broad across SSO, cloud, Docker, dbt, enterprise platforms
- Assess your current skills against the T-profile and identify gaps
- Understand why product sense is a required FDE skill, not optional
- Identify the consulting layer skills: Minto Pyramid, decomposition, stakeholder management
The Problem
The FDE role demands a skill profile that doesn't fit any single engineering discipline. You need deep expertise in one area (the vertical of the T) — typically ML/AI engineering — plus broad working knowledge across data engineering, cloud infrastructure, security, enterprise integration, and client communication (the horizontal bar). Too narrow and you can't handle the full deployment scope; too broad and you can't go deep enough on the AI components.
