The Tells of AI Voice
Learn to spot these in AI output. Once you see them, you can prompt against them:
1. The Hedging Opener
AI voice: "In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, businesses are increasingly looking for innovative solutions to..." Human voice: "Most marketing teams waste 40% of their budget on channels that don't convert."
AI loves to start with context-setting throat-clearing. Humans start with the point.
2. The Listicle Structure
AI voice: Everything is "5 Ways to..." or "The Top 3..." with perfectly balanced sections of equal length. Human voice: Uneven sections. One point gets 3 paragraphs because it matters more. Another gets one sentence.
3. Over-Used Phrases
Words and phrases AI loves: "delve into," "navigate the complexities of," "in the realm of," "it's worth noting that," "at the end of the day," "harness the power of," "a testament to," "in the ever-evolving world of."
Fix: Add to your prompt: "Avoid these phrases: delve, navigate, realm, it's worth noting, harness, testament, ever-evolving, tapestry, landscape (unless referring to actual geography)."
4. The Symmetrical Conclusion
AI voice: "In conclusion, while [topic] presents both challenges and opportunities, by [action], you can [benefit]. The key is to [thing], and with [quality], success is within reach." Human voice: A final thought, a specific recommendation, or a question — not a summary of what was just said.
5. Perfect Balance, No Stakes
AI writing is often perfectly balanced — every point has a counterpoint, every claim is hedged. It reads like a Wikipedia article. Human writing takes positions.
6. No Specifics
AI voice: "Many businesses struggle with productivity." Human voice: "The 12-person marketing team at a B2B SaaS company I worked with spent 6 hours a week in status meetings."
